The Straight Talk Hotspot is using Verizon CDMA services and it will very likely be 3g speeds. 3g speeds are comparable to that of satelite internet services and slow dsl. Data speeds are between .5 mbps and 3 mbps. To give you and idea, cable speeds can be as high as 25 mbps while dsl speeds as high as 15 mbps. Also, there are areas where there is Verizon but no 3g, you will be stuck with what is called Edge speeds which are like dial up. The hotspot would not be of much use in an area with no 3g speeds.

The reason for this is that the device simply turns it’s lights off but remains on and connected to the internet. So long as there is connectivity, that is you are actively using the internet in one way or another, the device will remain in this mode.
To verify that the hotspot is indeed in this battery saving mode, quickly press any of the side buttons and the lights will come back on, then shut off after about 30 seconds to a minute. The device will turn completely off after a period of time if there is not internet activity.
